Brief overview of Terry’s Story

After being diagnosed with bone cancer in 1977 and having his right leg amputated above the knee, Terry Fox was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry's “Marathon of Hope” took place in 1980 with the simple objective of informing Canadians about the importance of finding a cure for cancer. With fierce determination, Terry ran an average of 42 kilometres (26 miles) every day for 143 days. Terry was forced to end his run on September 1, 1980 when the cancer spread to his lungs. He died nine months later.

For the last 30 years, there has been an annual Terry Fox Run, the proceeds from which are used strictly for cancer research. It is an all-inclusive, non-competitive event open to runners, walkers, bikers, scooters and families that is now run by over 2 million people located in almost 40 countries around the world. The run has raised over $550 million for cancer research since it started in 1980.  https://www.terryfox.org

In case you want to a look back at Terry’s incredible journey, Steve Nash, who remembers vividly being inspired by Terry as a kid, just helped produced a really good video for ESPN 30/30 series:  http://30for30.espn.com/film/into-the-wind.html
